Seven college students killed as bus falls into gorge

Seven students of an engineering college in Thiruvananthapuram were killed when the bus they were travelling plunged into a gorge in Thekkinkanam in Rajakkad in Idukki district on Monday. The victims were students of Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology ( SIST), Vellanad. The final year electronics department students were on a picnic and were returning from Kodaikanal when the mishap occurred.

According to Adimali police, the vehicle lost control at a curve here and fell into the gorge around 12.30pm. There were 45 students apart from the driver and helper of the bus in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The bodies of Sreejesh, Vipin and Vignesh hailing from Shasthamangalam in Thiruvananthapuram, Shyju from Amabalamugal in Kochi and Sharathchandran from Nanthancode in Thiruvananthapuram were identified. 

Body of a girl and a boy are still not identified. The condition of two of the injured are serious. 

According to the college officials, the students had gone for this trip without the knowledge of the college officials. There was no teachers accompanying the group. 

Meanwhile, a control room has started functioning at Adimaly.
