Union’s role to be reduced in CUSAT Youth Fest

Selection of judges and distribution of certificates to participants at the annual Cochin University Youth Fest will no longer be the prerogative of the University union.

The varsity has decided to appoint an advisory committee headed by the pro-vice chancellor to streamline the conduct of arts, sports and other related events held every year. Besides senior officials, the committee will have director of Youth Welfare Department and the chairman of the University union as its members.

The schedule of events will be part of the academic calendar for the new academic year 2015-16. Cusat has also decided to provide a week’s attendance relaxation per semester for students participating in the arts fest instead of the 12 days demanded by the University union.

Senior officials told that a three-member committee comprising faculty members will be responsible for distribution of certificates to the participants of various events in the arts and sports competitions. The varsity had come across complaints of favouritism shown by the successive University unions in the distribution of certificates to the participants.

The union representatives will no longer be permitted to collect the mark sheets submitted by the panel of judges for each event. It will be the responsibility of the three-member faculty committee to ensure transparency in the selection of judges and the tabulation of results of various competitions.

The advisory committee for the conduct of arts and sports events will meet every three months. It will prepare an estimate budget for each programme based on the budgetary allocation for holding such events. The committee will also take a call on whether sponsorship should be sought for the conduct of the fest. They will also check the expertise of each member of the judging panel for various competitions.

Judges having a negative track record will be avoided. Secrecy and confidentiality will be maintained on the panel of judges. The committee will also be responsible for ensuring transparency in the award of grace marks for winners of each competition.
