Close to eight of the nearly 24 centres of learning at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) may soon face the axe for poor performance.
A Syndicate meeting of the varsity to be held on Saturday is likely to take a final call on closing down the underperforming centres. People close to the development told that the move was part of the re-structuring of study centres on the campus. Centres that pass the litmus test would have to scale up their performance in the coming months.
“The varsity had taken into account the performance of the poor performing centres during the last three years. It was found that some of these centres were non-functional, except for organising a few workshops and seminars,” they said.
The centre heads were asked to present a report card recently as part of rejuvenating the centres of learning. Many had claimed that they were active and charted out a list of seminars and workshops while a few others could not come up with credible answers on their three-year performance.
The varsity authorities have now decided not to retain centres that are similar in nature. “Moreover, the existing centres would have to offer short-term academic programmes to the students, especially in inter-disciplinary areas. The centres should also bag projects and consultancy work to sustain its functions,” they said. The centres, which are allowed to continue operations, would have to increase the research output.
